Born and raised in Carson, ND, the son of the local bank manager in an agricultural community. "Working" on Grandpa Boll's farm was a highlight of growing up in rural North Dakota, and influenced the rest of Monte's life. He went to college in Fargo, ND, at University of North Dakota, and majored in Agricultural Studies.

Shortly after graduating in 1962, he married his first wife of 25 years, Gail McVay, and moved to Boise, ID to work for the Bureau of Reclamation, Soil Science Division. This resulted in a 35 year career fueled by his passion for agriculture.

In December of 1989, Monte married his second wife, Mimia "Sue" Lytle McVay. This marriage lasted until Sue's death in 2013 - 23 years.

Monte was a devoted member of the True North Baptist Church in Garden City, ID. There, he met his last wife, Roselyn "Sue" Smith McVay. They were married at the church on June 7, 2015.

Monte was a kind and generous man who will be missed by his many friends in the Boise area, as well as his life-long friends and family in North Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Dwight McVay and Shirley Boll McVay, and his second wife, Mimia "Sue" McVay. He is survived by his current wife, R. Sue McVay of Boise, ID; sister, Sharon McVay Tosseth of Witten, North Dakota; step daughter, Valery Lambeth of Middleton, ID, and Tyann DeChambeau of Granite Bay, CA.

A funeral service will take place on Friday, August 26, 2016, at 11:00 am with a visitation to start at 10:00 am, both at Cloverdale Funeral Home. Burial to follow at Terrace Lawn Memorial Cemetery in Meridian, ID.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Monte's memory to: True North Baptist Church in Garden City, Idaho.
