Fred Siedenstrang passed away peacefully at home on September 22, 2016, at age 91.
He was born in 1925 to Fred and Alzia Green Siedenstrang in Amarillo, TX, where he grew up with siblings Betty and Roy. He helped out in his dad's carpentry shop and his uncle's filling station as a boy, and graduated from high school in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was accepted into midshipmen's school in Notre Dame, IN, graduating in November 1945 just two months after World War II ended.

He reported in February of 1946 to serve as Communication Officer aboard the ATA-176 Tonkawa, a seagoing tug assigned to support post-war operations in the South Pacific.

After completing his service, Fred attended the University of Oklahoma and earned a degree in chemical engineering. While attending graduate school at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Fred met Dorothy Ruh on a blind date. They married November 25, 1950 and settled in Borger, Texas where Fred began a career with Phillips Petroleum Company.

Their family grew quickly with the addition of five children over the next 10 years. Fred excelled at Phillips, receiving a U.S. patent in 1957 for his innovations in butane recovery and another in 1961 for a hydrocarbon separation method.

In 1963 the Siedenstrangs moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho, where Fred worked the remainder of his career at the Idaho National Laboratory. His work varied from reactor cooling upgrades to stress analyses and safety improvements.  He and Dorothy added two more children to their family, and all attended Holy Rosary Catholic school and graduated from Skyline High School. On weekends and vacations they fished and camped together, and spent many happy evenings around the dinner table, playing in the yard, and walking to nearby Tautphaus Park.

Fred retired in 1986 and he and Dorothy spent their free time traveling with children and grandchildren, volunteering at church, and maintaining their home on 21st Street where they lived for 44 years. In 2011 they relocated to Boise, and lived most recently with their daughter, Mary.

He is greatly missed by Dorothy, his children and their spouses: Matt and Katie Siedenstrang of Boise; Amy Siedenstrang and Jake Ellis of Boise; Karl Siedenstrang of Puyallup, WA; Chris and Lynn Siedenstrang of Cosmopolis, WA; Mary Siedenstrang of Boise; Fritz Siedenstrang and Pati D'Christensen of Garland, TX; and Dave and Lori Siedenstrang of Austin, TX. Fred will be fondly remembered by 11 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and many friends.
